For some reason the 2009 Chicago Bears' defense has been able to step up their efforts and slow down an otherwise powerful Green Bay Packers offense.

The opening play of the game didn't show that, when Ryan Grant went 65-yards for a TD on the opening Packers' possession on offense. However for the rest of the game the defense played well enough to win, well enough to keep the Packers from running away with the game and leaving the offense with the responsibility of winning the game.

Lovie SmithYet again the offense led by Jay Cutler did just enough to lose this game. Jay Cutler threw two INTs in the game and made a few other piss poor throws that could have been picked off.

In Cutler's defense he did play well enough at times for the Bears to win, but mistakes elsewhere on offense, costly penalties took big plays away as well.

Penalties were the overall story of the game with the Bears giving up 109 yards in free yardage, a lot of them at the most inopportune moments.

The bottom line is good teams find a way to win games like this and bad teams find a way to lose. The Bears have lost too many games like that this year, meaning there is a coaching problem in Chicago.

The stories of the game were Devin Aromashodu's career day (eight catches for 76 yards) and Lovie Smith's absolute mental melt down when he called a time out for absolutely no reason followed by a challenge of an obvious incomplete pass that cost the Bears two time outs in a matter of seconds.

It is that type of coaching break down by your head coach that is a sure sign a change needs to be made. I have seen that type of break down all over the league when other coaches were on the hot seat and it wound up costing them their jobs. Dennis Green in Arizona had a similar melt down, Wannstedt in both Chicago and Miami....it's prevalent throughout the history of the league.

Whether or not that will cost Lovie Smith his job here in Chicago remains to be seen. It's not likely it will and the Bears will be stuck with even worse problems next year.
