Numerous reports coming in at the moment have the Bears bringing back 2005 draftee safety Chris Harris in a trade for Bears linebacker Jamar Williams. Harris was quoted on his twitter account as saying that the deal isn't complete yet but that he is coming back to Chicago and he is very excited to be coming back home.
Harris has maintained a residence in the Gurnee even after his initial trade to the Panthers prior to the 2007 season. Harris has since developed into a major play maker for the Panthers forcing 12 fumbles in the last three seasons.
Harris stated that ""I'm excited because I have always had a place in my heart for the Bears. It's the team I started with. I think it's awesome. "I don't think I need a playbook. I know the defense. I'm ready to go."
Harris is expected to come back and immediately come in and start at strong safety along side rookie Major Wright who is expected to win the starting free safety job.
He enjoyed his best season with the Panthers immediately following the trade when he racked up 97 tackles and eight forced fumbles. Since then he has been unable to meet the same level of production while only gathering 70 tackles in 2008 and 60 tackles in 13 games in 2009.
The only signs of trouble I see regarding this trade is that Harris' production has dropped in each one of his seasons since he joined the Panthers. He enjoyed a career year in 2007 but since then has declined in each successive season. While this is a trade that doesn't come at a very high cost for the Bears it's debatable that Harris will significantly upgrade the safety spot.
Hopefully his two consecutive seasons of downward production is a fluke and not a sign that his career as a whole is trending downward.
