Kevin Shaffer out there, Johan Asiata Lance Louis Beekman running with the center, looks like Beekman is battling to primarily be the center and nothing else. Meaning a big change from last year to this is Tice is going to develop Beekman at center and give him a ton of reps to see if he can handle the load. I think right off the bat that this pre-season will be make or break for Beekman at the center position.
Hanie again with time complete to D.A. for a big first down, good protection good throw, Hanie looking sharp.
Hanie picked off after getting a lot of pressure from a big Chargers blitz primarily aimed at the A-gap. The blitz was picked up decently, no one got a free shot at Hanie, but the pocket collapsed around him and he wasn't able to completely follow through on his throw and it was picked off.
Chargers on offense Bears on defense
Not a terrible job at the point of attack by the front four on this next run play. DE Corey Wootton decently set the edge on this play and the Chargers gain about three on the play.
Wootton again sets the edge well on the run play great run blitz and gap fill by the entire defense, drops the RB for a loss.
Pocket collapses on a DT twist between Toeaina and Harrison....Wootton also gets good pressure off the edge, Bears' defense holds inside the red-zone with the Chargers having caused the turnover deep inside Chicago territory. Overall good stand by the back up defense.
Bears on offense 12:28 in the third
Decent run here by Khalil Bell the line blocks about average on this play and there are some positive yards.
Chargers blitz, false start, Chargers blitz again it's mostly picked up but the pressure comes late and flushes Hanie from the pocket. Hanie check down to Bell, goes for a nice first down nice YAC from Bell.
J'Marcus Webb nice run block to spring Bell for another decent gain. Beekman misses a block average blocking the rest of the way around, nothing spectacular. Beekman looks bad right now and has most of the game. Beekman again gets blown up at the point of attack, James Marten at RG looks bad not getting any push whatsoever. Webb looks good on two consecutive plays, he jumped to the second level out on the LB. Asiata I don't know what he's doing, trying to lean into a cut block or something.
Chargers blitz, a quick post by D.A. Hanie hits him in stride, and he takes it for a big 47-yard gain. Great route, great run after the catch, superb speed, great throw out of the blitz. Clicked all the way around here, D.A. showing off some speed as he pulls away from the CB who has the angle on him.
Hanie rolls and fire into the end-zone off the hands of Rashied Davis.....missed it by that much...
Bad run blocking and the play gets dropped for a loss. Shaffer pinched in hard on the inside zone and gave the DE a free shot at the RB.
Third and twelve from the 15 Hanie sandwiched fumbles off the blitz....no blitz pick up whatsoever...no hot route no nothing. I'm thinking that there may be times where the Bears are going to have to audible out of an obvious blitz situation like this. Otherwise they risk a miss communication on the sight adjustment and their QB gets tagged. Hanie is hurt this is where he hurts his shoulder after getting rolled on.
Bears sit in zone and get burned on a quick pass.
Blitz comes QB hit ball goes incomplete
Third and five Bears on defense, extremely bad read by the LB he comes up like he's biting on a play fake, only the play fake doesn't exist....those false steps cost him in coverage and in making the tackle...
Bad zone coverage again, completion for a quick first down. We have our first Henry Melton sighting as he gets pressure and a hit on the QB. Blitz comes pocket collapses sack on the QB....good front four and blitz pressure. Front four got a good push but the blitz made the sack.
Play-action pass no pressure from the front four....defense bites bad pass complete for a big gain. Bears play better when they're blitzing, not so good in coverage this half.
Wootton gets a good gap penetration the run but trips and falls and barely gets a hand on the back.
Lots of cut blocking on the rest of the D-Line springs it for a big gain.
Wootton again with pressure on the QB pass goes incomplete. Looks like it won't be too long until Wootton may get a look as a starter the way he's playing.
Bears show blitz and come with no blitz....stay in coverage and play bump and run...well executed pass comes out quickly and it's broken up by Joshua Moore. Bears hold to a field goal
Bears back on offense LeFevour takes over
Best run blocking I've seen by the offensive line ANY unit on the offensive line all night. The play goes for about eight yards as a result. Very good blocking by everyone on this play...nice pull by the guard Marten and he gets the kick out everything flows well and it shows.
Another run play goes bad with a rugby scrum...no push either way Bears gain minimal yards.
Bears run the ball again, rugby scrum again...no gain. Chargers know the Bears are not going to run the ball.
Short quick drop by LeFevour good pass, Mathews drops the pass...costing them a sure first down. Quick blitz quick pass...dropped ball....sucks.
Henry Melton gets great penetration and slows down the back enough for the rest of the defense to clean it up. Melton showing some speed through his gap
Afalava gets an INT just short of the endzone, good pressure from Gilbert.
Wrapping up the last of the game in summary....Corey Wootton looked good, Henry Melton showed up, Gilbert gottetpressure a couple times. Overall Wootton looked good like he could start, Melton played better than he has all camp and the defense did okay as a result. There were a lot of missed tackles by the linebackers, although the fourth and fifth string level linebackers aren't very good to begin with.
LeFevour got a lot of pressure and wasn't able to handle a lot of it. He threw some decent balls but nothing special wasn't helped out by the drops.
On the whole the second half showed that there isn't a lot depth to this team on the D-Line or O-Line. The Bears go simple two deep and even that could be classified as a bit shaky. This is a byproduct of very bad drafts by Jerry Angelo, but who cares so long as the Bears win games this year.
J'Marcus Webb was the best out extremely young O-Linemen and will be one to watch to see if he can earn a roster spot. He showed something and will be one to watch the rest of the pre-season.
