Yeah it's a bit harsh to judge a fourth round player as a bust in only his second year in the NFL, and oh yeah he is a fourth round pick. Problem is the Bears desperately need young talented depth on the offensive line and Henry Melton's slot in the draft in the fourth round is a nice place where the Bears could have grabbed a young talented guard or even a RT.
Henry Melton should have been cut yesterday according to Jeff Dickerson, of ESPN 1000, he can't play. Melton is currently behind Matt Toeaina, Marcus Harrison and of course the two starters on the Bears' depth chart. He's not putting himself in position to supplant either of these two as a second team back up DT. At best he earns a roster spot because of his draft spot in 2009, which is B.S. given that the Bears need someone else to come in and develop who can actually play.
Just throwing out one name drafted AFTER Henry Melton that maybe perhaps projects as a better player at a position of need, Duke Robinson offensive guard from Oklahoma. Robinson was considered by many to be the top rated offensive guard coming out for the 2009 NFL draft.
Melton however was considered a reach at the time and was drafted solely on his athletic ability and apparently what he did during an impressive private workout at Halas Hall. Melton was not a NFL scouting combine invitee and himself was projected as at best a seventh rounder undrafted free roagent player.
Melton is officially struggling to make the roster and likely won't play a down during the 2010 campaign. His play during the pre-season will be of utmost importance to his chances of making the roster. Melton perhaps more than any other player needs to come out and have a good pre-season, will he the doubters are out.
