Nic Richmond

News broke today that the Bears have lined up one of their first pre-draft visits with a 2010 offensive tackle prospect.  Nic Richmond from TCU is a 6-foot-7 322-pound player has started since his sophomore year for the Horned Frogs.

Richmond has primarily played right tackle at TCU although he played one game at LT during the Fiesta Bowl.  I'd like to sit here and try to find something positive to say about this development but I can't.

This is a prospect that isn't rated amongst the Top-50 OT prospects in the nation by most of the major draft sites.  He was not invited to the NFL combine and did not play in any of the major post-season all-star games like the  East-West Shrine game or the Senior Bowl.

Apparently he earned his invite based partially on the impression he made at the Texas vs. the Nation all-star game, a new game that takes place the week after the Senior Bowl.  This all-star game features the some of the best players that played high school in the state of Texas versus a roster of some of the best players from the rest of the nation.

It's completely baffling to me that the Bears are targeting such a low rated prospect based primarily on a performance he had during an extremely low tier low attended college football all-star game.

For obvious reasons when a college prospect isn't invited to the NFL scouting combine and you want to get a closer more personal look at him you bring him in for a personal work out.  But I think the Bears would still be better served to scout Richmond at his college pro-day before laying out an immediate invite for a personal visit.

The Bears are alloted a total of only 30 invited personal visits to Halas Hall, and they do typically focus on players of Richmond's caliber.  The question is with Richmond not even rated amongst the crop of top-50 OT prospects is this an early reach?
