If Lovie Smith is facing an ultimatum of playoffs or be fired for the 2010 season, he may want to just save himself the embarrassment and walk out now. Either that or new 2011 coach Bill Cowher will like the fact that he'll have a potential Top-5 NFL draft pick waiting for him via the 2011 draft.

Why am I such a pessimist for success a mere 24 hours after the end of the Bears 2009 season with a full off-season of activity to go?

Simple, the NFL just announced the opponents for our beloved Chicago Bears during the 2010 season.

While the 2009 season the Bears were said to have the easiest strength of schedule of any team in the NFL the schedule strength for 2010 will likely be completely the opposite.

The Bears opponents for 2010 are as follows:

Buffalo Bills

Miami Dolphins

New York Jets

New England Patriots

Philadelphia Eagles

New York Giants

Dallas Cowboys

Washington Redskins

Though the order of the games and the home and away aspect of the schedule won't be slated until later this summer, this is what we do know. That's eight games against playoff teams in 2010, 10 against teams who were in the playoffs race until the last two weeks of the season. The Jets, Cowboys, Patriots, Eagles represent four games against playoff teams, the Vikings and Packers are the other four games against playoff level teams.

10 of the games will be against teams with winning records, Seattle and Carolina represent two teams that the Bears seem to struggle with any time they line up and face them.

The 2009 version of the Bears were only able to defeat two teams with winning records, the Steelers and the Vikings.

The likelihood that 2010 will be better than 2009? Seems highly unlikely with that daunting schedule on the horizon. Unless some major changes happen the fate of Lovie Smith in 2010 may have been sealed by the NFL scheduling committee. A tough pill to swallow for Bears fans currently, but a possible blessing in disguise in the long run.
