The more things change the more things stay the same, as former Bears running back Cedric Benson was arrested yet again during the off-season. Benson was arrested twice while a member of the Chicago Bears which forced their hand as Benson was cut before the start of the 2008 season.
This time Benson was arrested for misdemeanor assault for punching a bar patron in the face after he was asked to leave a bar in Austin Texas. Benson immediately posted bail and was released, but this likely won't help his contract negotiations as he hopes to get paid for his semi-productive season in Cincy.
By semi-productive I mean Benson had the best season of his career, but still wasn't up to the lofty standards of his draft status, (fourth overall selection). As was the case during his short career in Chicago Benson dealt with injury problems which limited his productivity late in the season and contributed to the Bengals' early exit in the playoffs as Benson missed the playoff game entirely.
Most Bears fans are pretty angry that Benson played so well, blaming Angelo for not keeping Benson around even after the alcohol arrest related charges were dropped. Benson however remains consistent, he was 14th in the league in average yards per carry with a mediocre 4.2 YPC but was sixth overall in carries even though he played in only 13 of 16 games.
To put it simply Benson is still Benson mediocre production six touchdowns on the season, and off the field transgressions and injury problems that keep him from playing in all 16 NFL season.
Hopefully Bears fans don't feel as upset that Benson is now someone else's problem instead of a problem in Chicago.
