Former NFL defensive back Matt Bowen is starting a play book series this week on different defensive schemes and the coverages and responsibilities within those defenses.  Bowen played seven years in the NFL and appeared in 77 career games so he knows what he's talking about when it comes to breaking down defense.

With that in mind I figured I'd link to his article to help give our readers and idea of what different defenses around the NFL do.  Bowen starts out today with the Tampa-2 a defense run by the Bears, Vikings, Colts and Giants.  He gives you a basic fundamental understanding of the defense and the responsibilities of everyone within that defense and in this case gives examples of Bears players and what they do within this defense.

This is the type of football I want to break down for the readers on this blog, I want to be as specific and as detailed as possible when talking Chicago Bears football.   Since I don't have an NFL level of expertise when someone comes along with an NFL pedigree I'm going to make sure I bring you that information.

I want everyone to have a thorough knowledge and better understanding of not only the Bears but other teams throughout the NFL.  I think it's important to be able to debate and discuss the finer points of why the Bears employ the defense they do, or why it might be a better idea for the Bears to incorporate different aspects of other defenses throughout the NFL.

Anyway here is the article from Bowen and later we'll get more on the Cover-3 defense and others that are popular throughout the NFL.
