Bears Safety Major Wright Has Been Solid in Run Suppport
At the moment it's time to eat some crow because after the first preseason game I called for the benching of Major Wright because of his out of control play. While Wright was out of control in the first preseason game, it's become apparent through the first five of this season that the light bulb has clicked on.
Wright has been solid in run support and has played in control showing proper angles to the football and the ability to wrap up and make key tackles. Watching the film on Wright shows just how fast he is at reading and reacting, especially when he's back in the Cover-2 shell.
The Bears by nature like to keep their safeties deep when in their Cover-2 alignment, so deep in fact it's comical to the eye. Wright however doesn't let this slow him down, in run defense, he comes up and attacks the football and has securely made the tackle. Wright's been very disciplined against some very dangerous cutback runners like Maurice Jones Drew and DeMarco Murray.
To illustrate just how solid Wright has been I put together a brief slide show diagramming some of the tackles he's made in run support.
As you can say in each of the different photos, Wright has been a strong in the box defender as well as a strong Cover-2 support defender. In each instance Wright maintains his discipline, breaks down and makes the play.
Simple fundamental football that Wright had yet to show he had learned to play. Now Wright is lining up and taking on very elusive running backs like DeMarco Murray and Maurice Jones-Drew and making plays.
If he continues to play at this level and makes the type of plays in pass coverage he has this season, he should stay the starter. Major Wright is clearly beginning to show the reasons why the Bears were happy to grab him in the third round of the 2010 draft.
